SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Sci-Fi Moon Visions
DESCRIPTION:Free registration: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_bQIMo87bRUOODuFqWzEaqg \n\n\n\nAGENDA \n\n\n\nRemo Rapetti: Introduction \n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos: Long Before Rockets: Imagination’s Voyages to the Moon \n\n\n\n“As we return to the Moon with Artemis\, we should return to the many imaginary voyages we’ve taken to the Moon\, from Chinese folk tales to pioneering science fiction. These leaps of creative vision are more than nostalgic trifles. They tell us about ourselves and our attitudes toward places we explore and might settle. Imagination’s voyages to the Moon are one foundation for policy. They give us ethical trajectories to consider as competing interests aim for the ice-rich lunar south pole. Plus\, some of them are great fun.” \n\n\n\nErika Nesvold: Today’s Lunar Stories\, Tomorrow’s Lunar Challenges \n\n\n\n“Science fiction uses unearthly settings to explore humanity’s greatest fears and propose dreams for our future. Today’s stories set on the Moon are no exception: lunar science fiction films\, television shows\, novels\, and short stories imagine the Moon as a threat\, a resource\, or a home for humans in the not-so-distant future. Most frequently\, these stories portray the Moon as an extension of the Earth\, a secondary host to humanity’s ongoing struggles and conflicts. What cautionary tales can we find in these lunar stories\, and how can we apply their lessons to urgent questions of space policy as we prepare to turn science fiction into reality in the comingdecades?” \n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone: Comments and questions \n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos is the author or coeditor of several books\, including The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of Shooting Stars\, Hope Is the Things with Feathers: A Personal Chronicle of Vanished Birds\, and Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight. His new book —Still as Bright: An Illuminating History of the Moon from Antiquity to Tomorrow–came out in 2024  and has garnered praise from Booklist\, Kirkus Reviews\, Sky & Telescope and the Toronto Globe & Mail. He is the winner of awards and fellowships from\, among others\, New American Press\, the Whiting Foundation\, the Rachel Carson Center in Munich\, and the National Science Foundation. His poems\, articles\, and essays have appeared in such venues as Scientific American\, High Country News\, Astronomy\, Discover.com\, and the Los Angeles Times. Having taught literature\, writing\, and science communication for more than three decades at three universities\, he again lives and writes in Utah. \n\n\n\nErika Nesvold is an astrophysicist who has worked as a researcher at NASA Goddard and the Carnegie Institution for Science. She is a developer for Universe Sandbox\, a physics-based space simulator; cofounder of the nonprofit organization the JustSpace Alliance; and the creator and host of the podcast Making New Worlds. She is also the author of Off-Earth: Ethical Questions and Quandaries for Living in Outer Space and co-editor of Reclaiming Space: Progressive and Multicultural Visions of Space Exploration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n.

SUMMARY:Cultural Considerations WG webinar - Moon: Religion and Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Since the dawn of time\, the Moon has attracted the devoted attention of Earth’s inhabitants. It has been attributed divine powers\, magical abilities\, and significant influences on our daily lives\, from bottling wine to sowing seeds to cutting hair. With this webinar\, we intend to explore how primitive beliefs led to the Moon being seen as the first step toward the conquest of space. \n\n\n\nFree registration on Zoom\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\nRemo Rapetti: Introduction\n\n\n\nDeana Weibel: “The Once-Distant Moon: From a Sacred Light to a Human Domain”\n\n\n\nCarolyn Kennett: “Moonlit Monuments”\n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone: Comments and Questions.\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nDr. Deana L. Weibel is Professor of Anthropology at Grand Valley State University (USA)\, jointly appointed in GVSU’s Religious Studies program in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies. SUMMARY:Cultural Considerations WG Webinar - Afro-Futurism and Space Law
DESCRIPTION:It is not only Western culture that sees space research as an opportunity for knowledge\, improvement of living conditions and satisfaction of the spirit of adventure that has characterized the progress of humanity over the millennia. Even cultures not currently directly involved in the development of space projects have always looked towards the sky and have elaborated theories and legends that have served to keep people’s interest in the stars alive. With this webinar we intend to investigate the special relationship that African artistic creativity has with space and how contemporary artists use their traditions to collaborate on a more just and shared space research. \n\n\n\nFree registration: \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_P6lnl0eiRp2IT8uko2cTHw \n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\n\nRemo Rapetti: Introduction\n\n\n\nJacque Njeri\, African Futurist\, Artivist & Graphic Designer: Afro-Futurism in Space Culture.\n\n\n\nDr Saskia Vermeylen\, Reader in Law at the University of Strathclyde\, Scotland: Cultural storytelling for the protection of outer space.\n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone: Comments and questions.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJacque Njeri is a multifaceted artist and designer currently based in Nairobi\, Kenya\, with a Bachelor of Arts in Design from the University of Nairobi. Her work blends afro-futurism\, culture\, and advocacy\, addressing themes of governance\, youth\, inequality\, and gender justice through a futuristic lens. Globally recognized\, her art has been featured by CNN and BBC and exhibited at events like the Other Futures Festival in Amsterdam and the Kikk Festival in Belgium. Jacque’s practice challenges societal norms and inspires creativity as a tool for meaningful change. \n\n\n\nDr Saskia Vermeylen\, a Reader in Law at the University of Strathclyde\, Scotland\, is a phenomenologist and legal anthropologist whose interdisciplinary research explores the interplay of law\, space\, and cultural expression\, offering a unique perspective on space governance informed by arts theory and practice. She curated the exhibition “EXTR-Activism”\, which highlights artistic critiques of the commercial space race and its focus on mineral extractivism. Dr Vermeylen’s research challenges traditional understandings of space law by elevating artistic practices and theories as critical contributions to jurisprudence. Through her numerous publications\, she addresses key gaps in space governance and critiques the dominance of Eurocentric perspectives within the field.

SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Alternative Visions of Space Exploration
DESCRIPTION:“The most important lesson we learned from our first forays beyond our thin atmosphere was that we are in this together. We overcame gravity by working collectively toward an aligned goal. That same force must now allow us to overcome political and policy differences that are driven by circumstances such as what we look like\, where we live\, and who we love. Keeping our shared goals in mind can give us the ability to explore space for the benefit of all.” \n\n\n\n(Lori Garver\, Foreword to Schwartz\, James S.J.; Billings\, Linda; Nesvold\, Erika. SUMMARY:Cultural Considerations WG webinar - Still as bright
DESCRIPTION:“Still as Bright blends scientific\, cultural and personal strands in an exploration of the Moon and its place in our lives and in mine. I come to know the Moon through my backyard telescope\, traversing its wild and sublime surface while contemplating place\, time\, childhood\, mortality—and the future of humans on the Moon. You’ll meet forgotten selenographers\, astronauts\, scientists\, artists and lunar bat-men (hint: they’re not real). You’ll witness a rocket launch\, my failed attempt at an occult lunar ritual (a bit icky) and join me at the eyepiece of the 60-inch reflector at Mt. Wilson\, California (like orbiting in a capsule).” (Christopher Cokinos) \n\n\n\nKey Speakers\n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos\, author of the book Still as Bright: An Illuminating History of the Moon from Antiquity to Tomorrow.Francis French will add more background stories about Al Worden and other astronauts. \n\n\n\nIntroduction: Remo Rapetti \n\n\n\nComments and questions: Lisa Pettibone\, visual artistGiulio Prisco\, futurist\, cosmist\, author \n\n\n\nRegister to participate\n\n\n\n\nRegister on Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos is the author or coeditor of several books\, including The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of Shooting Stars\, Hope Is the Things with Feathers: A Personal Chronicle of Vanished Birds\, and Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight. SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Moon Rocks: Study and Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:‘For although our voyage is to be outward\, it is also to be inward\, to the sources of all great acts\, which are not out there\, but in here\, in us all\, where the muses dwell.’ Joseph Campbell\, Myths to Live By\, 1972 \n\n\n\nThe six Apollo Moon Surface Missions yielded a rich collection of lunar soil and rock\, gathered by astronauts\, that continue to reveal stories of the early solar system. Within these samples are clues to understanding the planetary processes that created Earth and even the prebiotic materials that support life. These extra-terrestrial rocks have immense value for researchers and human culture alike – this webinar will examine both aspects of their significance. \n\n\n\nTransdisciplinary Artist Erika Blumenfeld conceived and established the Astromaterials 3D virtual library for NASA as a permanent public resource for exploring the nature of the solar system and its formation. In this webinar she’ll discuss this pioneering project and how it relates to her art practice. Planetary Scientist Prof Ian Crawford (Birkbeck College\, University of London) will discuss the impact the Apollo Mission rock samples have had on our understanding of the Moon and the origin and evolution of the solar system. \n\n\n\nErika Blumenfeld is an artist\, researcher\, and writer who seeks engagement across the arts\, sciences\, and humanities to cultivate artworks and dialogue that explore the material and poetic origins of our relationship with the natural world. She approaches her work like an ecological archivist\, driven by a passion to trace and collect the evidence and stories of connection across the cosmos. A Guggenheim\, Smithsonian\, and Emerson Collective Fellow\, Blumenfeld has had studios in laboratories\, observatories\, and extreme environments\, and has collaborated with scientists and research institutions\, including NASA\, Scripps Institution of Oceanography\, McDonald Observatory\, and the South African National Antarctic Program. Her work has been exhibited widely and is featured in multiple books and museum collections. Blumenfeld is the creator and Science-Principal Investigator of Astromaterials 3D at NASA\, where she leads a team to create an interactive 3D virtual library of NASA’s astromaterials collections for researchers and the public. https://erikablumenfeld.com/ \n\n\n\nIan Crawford is an astronomer turned planetary scientist\, and is currently Professor of Planetary Science and Astrobiology at Birkbeck College\, University of London. The main focus of his research is in the area of lunar exploration\, including the remote sensing of the lunar surface and the laboratory analysis of lunar samples. Ian also has research interests in the field of astrobiology\, especially Martian analogue environments on Earth\, and in the future of space exploration which he believes will become increasingly important for the future of humanity. SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Space Habitats And Habitability: Designing For Isolated And Confined Environments On Earth And In Space
DESCRIPTION:With Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger and Sheryl Bishop \n\n\n\nIntroduction by Remo RapettiQ&A session by Arthur Woods \n\n\n\n\nHuman factors and habitability design are important topics for all working and living spaces. For space exploration\, they are vital. While human factors and certain habitability issues have been integrated into the design process of manned spacecraft\, there is a crucial need to move from mere survivability to factors that support thriving. As of today\, the risk of an incompatible vehicle or habitat design has already been identified by NASA as recognized key risk to human health and performance in space. Habitability and human factors will become even more important determinants for the design of future long-term and commercial space facilities as larger and more diverse groups occupy off-earth habitats.  The webinar will provide an overview of the evolution and advancements of designed living spaces for manned spacecrafts\, as well as analogue research and simulation facilities in extreme environments on Earth. \n\n\n\nSandra Häuplik-Meusburger\, PhD is a researcher and practicing architect in habitability design solutions for compact and extreme environments. She teaches and conducts ‘space architecture design studios’ at the department of building construction and design at the TU Wien for more than 15 years. Sandra is the academic director of the Science Academy in Lower Austria for which she developed the curriculum of a 2-year-interdisciplinary course on space research and technologies for adolescents. She is also the Academic Director of the new part-time MBA on Space Architecture that will start 2023 at the TU Wien.  She has published several scientific papers and worked on aerospace design and research projects\, as PI\, collaborator\, manager and initiator.  \n\n\n\nSheryl L. Bishop\, PhD is Professor Emeritus and Social Psychologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Nursing. As an internationally recognized behavioral researcher in extreme environments\, for the last 30 years Dr. Bishop has investigated human performance and group dynamics in teams in extreme\, unusual environments\, involving deep cavers\, mountain climbers\, desert survival groups\, polar expeditioners\, Antarctic winter-over groups and various simulations of isolated\, confined environments for space at remote habitats. She has over 60 publications (including NASA’s Historical Series on Psychology in Space) and over 50 scholarly presentations in both the medical and psychological fields.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister on Zoom to participate: \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_f1Dt5UqXTaitoICeiOL1DA \n\n\n\nThe webinar will be streamed on the MVA Youtube channel

SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Space Design For A New Extra-Terrestrial Human Being
DESCRIPTION:with Annalisa Dominoni & Benedetto Quaquaro \n\n\n\nIntroduction by  Remo Rapetti\, Q&A session by Arthur Woods \n\n\n\nThursday\, September 15\, 2022\, at 17.30 CEST \n\n\n\nWhy “Space Design”? We believe space today\, and in the future\, will have an ever more decisive influence on the daily life\, behaviours and performance of people\, and\, consequently\, on the transformative capacity of private companies to generate innovation and new business models\, thanks to the strategic contribution of design. “Go to space” is the new aspirational dream. \n\n\n\nDesign is visionary\, design is innovation\, and act as a “bridge” between science and beauty\, speaking the different languages of engineering\, technology\, but also culture\, art and economy\, keeping at the centre the needs of people\, with the aim of increasing the well-being of living space and extreme environments looking at the “human sensible factors”. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar is presented the new emerging discipline of “Space Design” in between space and earth that anticipates the scenario of the future human space missions: if astronauts feel better in a comfortable environment\, considering physiological\, psychological\, and emotional factors\, their performance\, and the success of the whole mission increase. \n\n\n\nThe speakers\, thanks to their more than twenty-year experience in researching and designing for space at the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano\, as extra-terrestrial habitation modules and tools that have been used by astronauts on-board the International Space Station (ISS)\, have helped assert design’s role and purpose in the space field. They created and are leading currently at the School of Design the 1st and unique course in space design called “Space4InspirAction” recognized and supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) in which research and teaching are strongly connected with industry to create a dialogue between space technology and productive knowledge and generate innovation. \n\n\n\nBoth PhDs\, architects\, designers and professors\, they founded the studio (a+b) in Milan with the aim of doing design by combining research and technological innovation with poetry. They regularly collaborate with leading international space agencies and industries and major design companies\, at the same time they conduct research activities at the Design Department of the Politecnico di Milano\, together with teaching and publishing essays on the culture of the project that have contributed to affirming the strategic role of design in Space. \n\n\n\nRegister to participate: \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_4yP4aL0UR1SIF9TeaIBMRw
