SUMMARY:The Registration Project First Public Workshop - Registering Lunar Activities: Possible Solutions to the Shortcomings of Current Law and Practice
DESCRIPTION:The Registration Project was launched to address the shortcomings of existing law and practice regarding registration as humankind returns to the Moon. The Project is a joint venture of the Moon Village Association (MVA) and the Global Space Law Center (GSLC) at Cleveland State University.The Registration Project’s first public workshop will take place via Zoom on Thursday\, June 24\, 2021 from 17:00 to 19:00 CET (11 a.m.-1 p.m. EDT). In a field where many principles lay untested\, the obligation to register has a long history of compliance. Counting thousands of registrations\, the Registration Convention (RC) is arguably the most utilized space treaty. \n\n\n\nOVERVIEW OF THE REGISTRATION PROJECTThe Registration Project was launched in 2021 to address the shortcomings of existing law and practice regarding the registration as humankind returns to the Moon. This self-governed working group is a joint venture of the Moon Village Association (MVA) and the Global Space Law Center (GSLC) at Cleveland State University. The group consists of 25 members from around the world drawn from industry\, academia\, government\, and nongovernmental organizations. The ultimate work product of the Registration Project will be a White Paper to be submitted to the COPUOS in order to encourage the multilateral discussion of issues related to registration law and practice. This White Paper will also be shared with the MVA’s Global Expert Group on Sustainable Lunar Activities (GEGLSA) in order to supplement the GEGSLA’s work regarding registration.
