SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Sci-Fi Moon Visions
DESCRIPTION:Free registration: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_bQIMo87bRUOODuFqWzEaqg \n\n\n\nAGENDA \n\n\n\nRemo Rapetti: Introduction \n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos: Long Before Rockets: Imagination’s Voyages to the Moon \n\n\n\n“As we return to the Moon with Artemis\, we should return to the many imaginary voyages we’ve taken to the Moon\, from Chinese folk tales to pioneering science fiction. These leaps of creative vision are more than nostalgic trifles. They tell us about ourselves and our attitudes toward places we explore and might settle. Imagination’s voyages to the Moon are one foundation for policy. They give us ethical trajectories to consider as competing interests aim for the ice-rich lunar south pole. Plus\, some of them are great fun.” \n\n\n\nErika Nesvold: Today’s Lunar Stories\, Tomorrow’s Lunar Challenges \n\n\n\n“Science fiction uses unearthly settings to explore humanity’s greatest fears and propose dreams for our future. Today’s stories set on the Moon are no exception: lunar science fiction films\, television shows\, novels\, and short stories imagine the Moon as a threat\, a resource\, or a home for humans in the not-so-distant future. Most frequently\, these stories portray the Moon as an extension of the Earth\, a secondary host to humanity’s ongoing struggles and conflicts. What cautionary tales can we find in these lunar stories\, and how can we apply their lessons to urgent questions of space policy as we prepare to turn science fiction into reality in the comingdecades?” \n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone: Comments and questions \n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos is the author or coeditor of several books\, including The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of Shooting Stars\, Hope Is the Things with Feathers: A Personal Chronicle of Vanished Birds\, and Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight. His new book —Still as Bright: An Illuminating History of the Moon from Antiquity to Tomorrow–came out in 2024  and has garnered praise from Booklist\, Kirkus Reviews\, Sky & Telescope and the Toronto Globe & Mail. He is the winner of awards and fellowships from\, among others\, New American Press\, the Whiting Foundation\, the Rachel Carson Center in Munich\, and the National Science Foundation. His poems\, articles\, and essays have appeared in such venues as Scientific American\, High Country News\, Astronomy\, Discover.com\, and the Los Angeles Times. Having taught literature\, writing\, and science communication for more than three decades at three universities\, he again lives and writes in Utah. \n\n\n\nErika Nesvold is an astrophysicist who has worked as a researcher at NASA Goddard and the Carnegie Institution for Science. She is a developer for Universe Sandbox\, a physics-based space simulator; cofounder of the nonprofit organization the JustSpace Alliance; and the creator and host of the podcast Making New Worlds. She is also the author of Off-Earth: Ethical Questions and Quandaries for Living in Outer Space and co-editor of Reclaiming Space: Progressive and Multicultural Visions of Space Exploration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n.

SUMMARY:Cultural Considerations WG webinar - Moon: Religion and Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Since the dawn of time\, the Moon has attracted the devoted attention of Earth’s inhabitants. It has been attributed divine powers\, magical abilities\, and significant influences on our daily lives\, from bottling wine to sowing seeds to cutting hair. With this webinar\, we intend to explore how primitive beliefs led to the Moon being seen as the first step toward the conquest of space. \n\n\n\nFree registration on Zoom\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\nRemo Rapetti: Introduction\n\n\n\nDeana Weibel: “The Once-Distant Moon: From a Sacred Light to a Human Domain”\n\n\n\nCarolyn Kennett: “Moonlit Monuments”\n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone: Comments and Questions.\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nDr. Deana L. Weibel is Professor of Anthropology at Grand Valley State University (USA)\, jointly appointed in GVSU’s Religious Studies program in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies. Her research focuses on the intersections of religion\, science\, and space exploration\, including how astronauts’ subjective experiences in space are used in spirituality and meaning-making. She is the author of The Ultraview Effect: What We Can Learn from Astronauts About Awe\, Humility\, and Exploring the Unknown (University of California Press\, forthcoming May 2026). \n\n\n\nCarolyn Kennett is an archaeoastronomer\, astronomer\, and author. She serves as Chair of the Society for the History of Astronomy and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. SUMMARY:12th IAA Symposium on Future Space Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Thhe 12th IAA Symposium on Future Space Exploration will take place in Torino\, Italy and is Co-Chaired by the MVA Pressident\, Dr. Giuseppe Reibaldi.\n\n\n\n\nWebsite\n\n\n\n\nSYMPOSIUM DATES AND LOCATIONA new three-days International Symposium on the future of Space Exploration will be organized by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIDAA). The symposium will be held at Politecnico di Torino\, Italy\, on 9-11 June 2025. \n\n\n\nSYMPOSIUM GOALSThe International Academy of Astronautics has been fostering global cooperation in human and robotic space exploration for more than five decades. With the return to the Moon already started with robotics spacecraft and with humans in the next few years\, planning for exploration beyond LEO is becoming finally a reality\, while it is expected that the world’s space agencies will leave much of the work in LEO to private organizations. With the support of AIDAA\, the goals of this new Symposium are to present the final results of IAA activities related to programs beyond LEO\, beginning with the Moon Village vision. The Moon Village is considered the next logical step for humans beyond LEO and a stepping stone for Mars exploration and other interplanetary journeys. The aim is to promote an exchange of ideas and experiences\, within the space community\, discussing the activities presented\, and proposing new concrete global space exploration activities involving established and emerging space agencies and industries.Special effort will be devoted to involve young professionals and new space start-up companies\, making the symposium a forum for fostering new initiatives.Papers related to technology\, science\, programmatics\, economics\, ethical and cultural aspects of exploration will be accepted.

SUMMARY:Cultural Considerations WG Webinar - Afro-Futurism and Space Law
DESCRIPTION:It is not only Western culture that sees space research as an opportunity for knowledge\, improvement of living conditions and satisfaction of the spirit of adventure that has characterized the progress of humanity over the millennia. Even cultures not currently directly involved in the development of space projects have always looked towards the sky and have elaborated theories and legends that have served to keep people’s interest in the stars alive. With this webinar we intend to investigate the special relationship that African artistic creativity has with space and how contemporary artists use their traditions to collaborate on a more just and shared space research. \n\n\n\nFree registration: \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_P6lnl0eiRp2IT8uko2cTHw \n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\n\nRemo Rapetti: Introduction\n\n\n\nJacque Njeri\, African Futurist\, Artivist & Graphic Designer: Afro-Futurism in Space Culture.\n\n\n\nDr Saskia Vermeylen\, Reader in Law at the University of Strathclyde\, Scotland: Cultural storytelling for the protection of outer space.\n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone: Comments and questions.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJacque Njeri is a multifaceted artist and designer currently based in Nairobi\, Kenya\, with a Bachelor of Arts in Design from the University of Nairobi. Her work blends afro-futurism\, culture\, and advocacy\, addressing themes of governance\, youth\, inequality\, and gender justice through a futuristic lens. Globally recognized\, her art has been featured by CNN and BBC and exhibited at events like the Other Futures Festival in Amsterdam and the Kikk Festival in Belgium. Jacque’s practice challenges societal norms and inspires creativity as a tool for meaningful change. \n\n\n\nDr Saskia Vermeylen\, a Reader in Law at the University of Strathclyde\, Scotland\, is a phenomenologist and legal anthropologist whose interdisciplinary research explores the interplay of law\, space\, and cultural expression\, offering a unique perspective on space governance informed by arts theory and practice. She curated the exhibition “EXTR-Activism”\, which highlights artistic critiques of the commercial space race and its focus on mineral extractivism. Dr Vermeylen’s research challenges traditional understandings of space law by elevating artistic practices and theories as critical contributions to jurisprudence. Through her numerous publications\, she addresses key gaps in space governance and critiques the dominance of Eurocentric perspectives within the field.

SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Alternative Visions of Space Exploration
DESCRIPTION:“The most important lesson we learned from our first forays beyond our thin atmosphere was that we are in this together. We overcame gravity by working collectively toward an aligned goal. That same force must now allow us to overcome political and policy differences that are driven by circumstances such as what we look like\, where we live\, and who we love. Keeping our shared goals in mind can give us the ability to explore space for the benefit of all.” \n\n\n\n(Lori Garver\, Foreword to Schwartz\, James S.J.; Billings\, Linda; Nesvold\, Erika. Reclaiming Space: Progressive and Multicultural Visions of Space Exploration\,  Oxford University Press.)  \n\n\n\nAgenda:\n\n\n\n\nIntroduction: Remo Rapetti\n\n\n\nJS Johnson-Schwartz: Reflections on “Reclaiming Space”.\n\n\n\nErika Nesvold: Culture on the Moon: The Practical and Ethical Value of Including Diverse Cultural Perspectives in Space Exploration.\n\n\n\nComments and questions: Giulio Prisco\, futurist\, cosmist\, author\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\nRegister on Zoom\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nJS Johnson-Schwartz is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Wichita State University where she teaches courses on the ethics of space exploration\, engineering ethics\, environmental ethics\, and logic. SUMMARY:Cultural Considerations WG webinar - Still as bright
DESCRIPTION:“Still as Bright blends scientific\, cultural and personal strands in an exploration of the Moon and its place in our lives and in mine. I come to know the Moon through my backyard telescope\, traversing its wild and sublime surface while contemplating place\, time\, childhood\, mortality—and the future of humans on the Moon. You’ll meet forgotten selenographers\, astronauts\, scientists\, artists and lunar bat-men (hint: they’re not real). You’ll witness a rocket launch\, my failed attempt at an occult lunar ritual (a bit icky) and join me at the eyepiece of the 60-inch reflector at Mt. SUMMARY:Earth Day 2024 - Climate Action & Lunar Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Event co-organised with The Human Space Program and Cosmic Citizen Trainings\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nhttps://www.cosmiccitizen.training/space4earth \n\n\n\nLove it or hate it\, a new era of Lunar exploration is here. Join the conversation and influence its unfolding. \n\n\n\nAt the start of this new venture of a permanent presence on the Moon\, we aim to stimulate the alliance of Earth and Space environmentalists. Together\, let’s take a hard look at the ramifications of exploration and utilization of the Moon and create a roadmap to ensure this movement off world truly is of benefit for Earth and all Humankind. \n\n\n\nWith global interest in Lunar exploration and utilization\, we need to start to clearly define the modus operandi for activities on and around the Moon. The Moon Village Association has initiated the Global Expert Group on Sustainable Lunar Activities (GEGSLA). This group published a report that has inspired the United Nations to start this important discussion. \n\n\n\nNow is the time to define how to protect lunar environment and its link to the Earth environment. \n\n\n\nPanel 1What is “The Environment” in this New Space Age? \n\n\n\nPanel 2Can Lunar exploration help mitigate the Climate Crisis?

SUMMARY:"The Path of Man between Science and Technology" : 40 Years Later The Return to the Moon and the Emergence of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:At the Giorgio Amendola Foundation\, Via Tollegno 52 – 10154 Turin (TO) \n\n\n\nTuesday\, April 16\, 2024 from 10:00 to 20:00 \n\n\n\nIn 1984\, on the first issue of the “Rinnovamento” magazine published by the emerging Amendola Foundation\, Gianni Jarre\, a professor of aerospace engineering at the Polytechnic University of Turin\, in an article titled “The Path of Man between Science and Technology” traced the history of the interaction between science and technology\, highlighting key moments in their development. Starting from the inventions of Stephenson and Faraday in the nineteenth century\, science and technology have evolved in parallel; an example is the scientific understanding of electromagnetism which led to innovations such as the dynamo and the telephone. Jarre then highlighted the role of empirical technique in the success of\, for example\, the Wright brothers\, who in 1903 built the first airplane\, defying the predictions of official science and contributing to the development of aeronautics. The growing interconnection between technology\, science\, and civilization in the twentieth century generated rapid progress in sectors such as missile technology and nuclear engineering. Jarre concluded the article by emphasizing the crucial need to manage the complex relationship between different emerging attitudes in society (“technophilia” vs “technophobia”) to guide society towards a more responsible future civilization. \n\n\n\nToday\, 40 years later\, this need is still present and relevant in emerging technological and scientific challenges\, examples of which are the renewed human exploration activities of space and the Moon by all national space agencies\, and in the field of computing\, the emergence of a new form of artificial intelligence on Earth and in space. Managing these relationships is at the core of the motivations of the Moon Village Association (moonvillageassociation.org)\, an international NGO dedicated to the sustainable development of lunar exploration\, and the Giorgio Amendola Foundation\, which has always been committed to issues of the social impact of technologies and emerging scientific challenges. And these are the themes on which we would like to reflect together on this day. \n\n\n\nDuring the all-day (10:00 to 20:00) \, there will be representatives from the Moon Village Association\, PoliTo\, PoliMi\, the ITS Aerospace Academy Piedmont\, and ITC Linderberg\, also will be possible to visit the exhibitions: \n\n\n\n“Innovative Technologies for Lunar Exploration”: \n\n\n\n“CubeSat Self-propelled” (Newroboticarm) \n\n\n\n“Intelligent” Fabrics for Space Exploration (Fiscatech & BeD) \n\n\n\n“So Far\, So Close”: Cosmic Ray Measurements in Space with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (ams02.space) and ground control of space missions”; \n\n\n\n“Radiation and Safety on the Moon: Active Shielding for Radiation Protection: How fundamental research addresses the problem of shielding from cosmic rays in lunar exploration. \n\n\n\nFrom 15:00 to 18:30 there will be the following speeches \n\n\n\n\n15:00-15:10 “Introduction”\, Prospero Cerabona – President of the Amendola Foundation\n\n\n\n15:10-15:25 “Istitutional geetings“\, Andrea Tronzano – Councilor for the development of productive activities and SMEs and for the Budget – Regione Piemonte\n\n\n\n15:25-15:40 “The Moon Village Association”: Giuseppe Reibaldi – President of the Moon Village Association\n\n\n\n15:40-16:10 “Robotic Technologies for Lunar Applications and AI”: Giovanni Giordano – CEO Newroboticarm\, Giovanni Spada- Newroboticarm\, Sergio Lodezzano – Newroboticarm\n\n\n\n16:10-16:40 “Wearable Technologies for Health Monitoring: space missions and terrestrial applications”\, Giovanni Giordano – CEO Newroboticarm\, Sergio Lodezzano- Newroboticarm\, Cristiano Paron – Fiscatech\, Francesco Bonaccorso- BeD\n\n\n\n16:40-17:10 “How astronauts see” Carlo Aleci – Prof. of Psychophysics of Vision at the University of Turin 17:10-17:40 Lecture from Voyager Space\n\n\n\n17:40-18:00 Round table on the topics addressed: Prof. P. Maggiore\, Prof. S. Pastorelli\, and Dr. M. Mancini from PoliTO will intervene\n\n\n\n18:00-18:30 Discussion and Conclusion\n\n\n\n\nFor information write to\n\n\n\ngiovanni.giordano@newroboticarm.com \n\n\n\nalessandro.bartoloni@moonvillageassociation.org
