Johnson is a Professor in the Graduate Social Anthropology Program of the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City\, where she teaches classes on science and technology\, the anthropology of futures\, and material culture. She has a Ph.D. in social anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. Her publications about outer space include articles in the Revista Colombiana de Antropología (2023) and Acta Astronautica (2021)\, as well as chapters in the edited works Exploring Ethnography of Outer Space (Routledge\, 2025)\, Space Feminisms (Routledge\, 2024)\, The Routledge Encyclopedia of the Social Studies of Outer Space (Routledge\, 2023)\, and Southern Space Studies (Springer\, 2002).  Her book From the Cosmic Race to the Space Race on Mexican engagements with outer space is forthcoming with the University of Arizona Press. \n\n\n\nUmbriel López Avalos is the head of the Citizen Participation Department at the Instituto Electoral del Estado de Guanajuato. He holds a B.A. in social anthropology from the Universidad de Guanajuato and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in political analysis at the Division of Law\, Politics\, and Government at the same institution. Since 2019\, he has worked at the Electoral Institute of the state of Guanajuato\, where he currently serves as the head of the Citizen Participation Department\, leading programs focused on addressing the needs of youth in the state of Guanajuato. He is a member of the National Electoral Professional Service\, and his academic research topics focus on the impact of non-institutionalized youth participation in the state’s democratization process\, youth in democracy\, political engagement during adolescence\, systems of political value transmission\, and mechanisms for citizen participation. \n\n\n\nAlejandro Viadas Loyo has a B.A. in International Relations with a focus on Political Analysis from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in political analysis at the Universidad de Guanajuato. He is the co-founder and coordinator of the Center for Global Order Studies (CESOG)\, where he conducts research on Mexico’s role in the aerospace value chain\, the Mexican space program\, and new trade routes within a multipolar globalization. He was also a jury member of the Mexican experimental rocketry contest (ENMICE) in 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Thhe 12th IAA Symposium on Future Space Exploration will take place in Torino\, Italy and is Co-Chaired by the MVA Pressident\, Dr. Giuseppe Reibaldi.\n\n\n\n\nWebsite\n\n\n\n\nSYMPOSIUM DATES AND LOCATIONA new three-days International Symposium on the future of Space Exploration will be organized by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIDAA). The symposium will be held at Politecnico di Torino\, Italy\, on 9-11 June 2025. \n\n\n\nSYMPOSIUM GOALSThe International Academy of Astronautics has been fostering global cooperation in human and robotic space exploration for more than five decades. With the return to the Moon already started with robotics spacecraft and with humans in the next few years\, planning for exploration beyond LEO is becoming finally a reality\, while it is expected that the world’s space agencies will leave much of the work in LEO to private organizations.With the support of AIDAA\, the goals of this new Symposium are to present the final results of IAA activities related to programs beyond LEO\, beginning with the Moon Village vision. The Moon Village is considered the next logical step for humans beyond LEO and a stepping stone for Mars exploration and other interplanetary journeys.The aim is to promote an exchange of ideas and experiences\, within the space community\, discussing the activities presented\, and proposing new concrete global space exploration activities involving established and emerging space agencies and industries.Special effort will be devoted to involve young professionals and new space start-up companies\, making the symposium a forum for fostering new initiatives.Papers related to technology\, science\, programmatics\, economics\, ethical and cultural aspects of exploration will be accepted.

Sabat holds a PhD in high-energy astrophysics from the University of Paul Sabatier in Toulouse\, France\, and is now Director of Scientific Affairs & Training at the Regional Center for Space Science & Technology Education for Western Asia\, Amman\, Jordan. Former Dean of the Institute of Astronomy and Space Sciences/ Al al-Bayt University\, Mafraq\, Jordan\, and Former President of the Jordanian Astronomical Society\, Amman\, he has also been Jordan’s National Coordinator of the International Space Weather Initiative (ISWI)\, the International Year of Astronomy (IYA 2009) & the International Heliophysical Year (IHY 2007). Highly involved in the popularization of astronomy and space science in Jordan and the Arab world through public lectures\, articles and TV interviews\, he is also highly involved in educational curricula\, particularly in astronomy and space science. \n\n\n\nSahba El-Shawa is the Founder of the Jordan Space Research Initiative (JSRI)\, which aims to bridge sustainability with space exploration through analog research and capacity building in Jordan\, as well as the Palestine Space Institute (PSI)\, a think tank dedicated to decoupling space from the military-industrial complex and advancing social and environmental justice.  She is the first Jordanian and the first female Palestinian analog astronaut\, and she led the organization of the first Jordanian analog space mission through JSRI in 2024. An award-winning researcher\, Sahba was named an Emerging Space Leader by the International Astronautical Federation in 2023.Sahba holds a BASc in Mechanical Engineering\, an MSc in Space Studies\, and is currently completing her PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change. During her academic career\, she has worked with the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the European Space Agency (ESA) on projects ranging from robotics and VR applications to the environmental impacts of space activities and the use of AI for EO. Sahba’s interdisciplinary work and research is guided by a vision of space exploration grounded in justice\, cultural identity\, and collective responsibility. She is committed to fostering a more ethical\, equitable\, and sustainable future – both on Earth and in space.

Her research focuses on the intersections of religion\, science\, and space exploration\, including how astronauts’ subjective experiences in space are used in spirituality and meaning-making. She is the author of The Ultraview Effect: What We Can Learn from Astronauts About Awe\, Humility\, and Exploring the Unknown (University of California Press\, forthcoming May 2026). \n\n\n\nCarolyn Kennett is an archaeoastronomer\, astronomer\, and author. She serves as Chair of the Society for the History of Astronomy and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Her research and writing explore topics ranging from planetary science to Cornish prehistory. Carolyn has appeared on BBC Sky at Night and is a regular contributor to regional television and radio programmes. She has presented her work at conferences around the world.

These leaps of creative vision are more than nostalgic trifles. They tell us about ourselves and our attitudes toward places we explore and might settle. Imagination’s voyages to the Moon are one foundation for policy. They give us ethical trajectories to consider as competing interests aim for the ice-rich lunar south pole. Plus\, some of them are great fun.” \n\n\n\nErika Nesvold: Today’s Lunar Stories\, Tomorrow’s Lunar Challenges \n\n\n\n“Science fiction uses unearthly settings to explore humanity’s greatest fears and propose dreams for our future. Today’s stories set on the Moon are no exception: lunar science fiction films\, television shows\, novels\, and short stories imagine the Moon as a threat\, a resource\, or a home for humans in the not-so-distant future. Most frequently\, these stories portray the Moon as an extension of the Earth\, a secondary host to humanity’s ongoing struggles and conflicts. What cautionary tales can we find in these lunar stories\, and how can we apply their lessons to urgent questions of space policy as we prepare to turn science fiction into reality in the comingdecades?” \n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone: Comments and questions \n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos is the author or coeditor of several books\, including The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of Shooting Stars\, Hope Is the Things with Feathers: A Personal Chronicle of Vanished Birds\, and Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight. His new book —Still as Bright: An Illuminating History of the Moon from Antiquity to Tomorrow–came out in 2024  and has garnered praise from Booklist\, Kirkus Reviews\, Sky & Telescope and the Toronto Globe & Mail. He is the winner of awards and fellowships from\, among others\, New American Press\, the Whiting Foundation\, the Rachel Carson Center in Munich\, and the National Science Foundation. His poems\, articles\, and essays have appeared in such venues as Scientific American\, High Country News\, Astronomy\, Discover.com\, and the Los Angeles Times. Having taught literature\, writing\, and science communication for more than three decades at three universities\, he again lives and writes in Utah. \n\n\n\nErika Nesvold is an astrophysicist who has worked as a researcher at NASA Goddard and the Carnegie Institution for Science. She is a developer for Universe Sandbox\, a physics-based space simulator; cofounder of the nonprofit organization the JustSpace Alliance; and the creator and host of the podcast Making New Worlds. She is also the author of Off-Earth: Ethical Questions and Quandaries for Living in Outer Space and co-editor of Reclaiming Space: Progressive and Multicultural Visions of Space Exploration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n.

How should human space experience be regulated? What obligations do humans have to non-human life in space? These three questions offer a route into conceiving of space as a special source of philosophical enquiry.” (Rebecca Lowe) \n\n\n\nRebecca Lowe is Philosophy Senior Research Fellow at the Mercatus Center\, where she is also Director of Emerging Scholars. She is working on two books: ‘Freedom in Utopia’\, and ‘Speaking Freely’. She writes a Substack called ‘the ends don’t justify the means’\, and hosts a podcast called ‘Working Definition’. She often writes about space\, and until recently served as Consulting Space Philosopher for a strategic space advisory firm. Her space publications include an article on the value of space activity for Economic Affairs\, a follow-up piece for the American Philosophical Association blog on the value of private space activity\, and a paper for the Adam Smith Institute on lunar property rights. Other highlights have included appearing on the Planetary Society’s podcast\, and giving a keynote talk for the Flight Software Workshop at Johns Hopkins.
