It has been attributed divine powers\, magical abilities\, and significant influences on our daily lives\, from bottling wine to sowing seeds to cutting hair. Weibel is Professor of Anthropology at Grand Valley State University (USA)\, jointly appointed in GVSU’s Religious Studies program in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies. Her research focuses on the intersections of religion\, science\, and space exploration\, including how astronauts’ subjective experiences in space are used in spirituality and meaning-making. She is the author of The Ultraview Effect: What We Can Learn from Astronauts About Awe\, Humility\, and Exploring the Unknown (University of California Press\, forthcoming May 2026). \n\n\n\nCarolyn Kennett is an archaeoastronomer\, astronomer\, and author. She serves as Chair of the Society for the History of Astronomy and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Her research and writing explore topics ranging from planetary science to Cornish prehistory. Carolyn has appeared on BBC Sky at Night and is a regular contributor to regional television and radio programmes. She has presented her work at conferences around the world.

These leaps of creative vision are more than nostalgic trifles. They tell us about ourselves and our attitudes toward places we explore and might settle. Imagination’s voyages to the Moon are one foundation for policy. They give us ethical trajectories to consider as competing interests aim for the ice-rich lunar south pole. Plus\, some of them are great fun.” \n\n\n\nErika Nesvold: Today’s Lunar Stories\, Tomorrow’s Lunar Challenges \n\n\n\n“Science fiction uses unearthly settings to explore humanity’s greatest fears and propose dreams for our future. Today’s stories set on the Moon are no exception: lunar science fiction films\, television shows\, novels\, and short stories imagine the Moon as a threat\, a resource\, or a home for humans in the not-so-distant future. Most frequently\, these stories portray the Moon as an extension of the Earth\, a secondary host to humanity’s ongoing struggles and conflicts. What cautionary tales can we find in these lunar stories\, and how can we apply their lessons to urgent questions of space policy as we prepare to turn science fiction into reality in the comingdecades?” \n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone: Comments and questions \n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos is the author or coeditor of several books\, including The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of Shooting Stars\, Hope Is the Things with Feathers: A Personal Chronicle of Vanished Birds\, and Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight. His new book —Still as Bright: An Illuminating History of the Moon from Antiquity to Tomorrow–came out in 2024  and has garnered praise from Booklist\, Kirkus Reviews\, Sky & Telescope and the Toronto Globe & Mail. He is the winner of awards and fellowships from\, among others\, New American Press\, the Whiting Foundation\, the Rachel Carson Center in Munich\, and the National Science Foundation. His poems\, articles\, and essays have appeared in such venues as Scientific American\, High Country News\, Astronomy\, Discover.com\, and the Los Angeles Times. Having taught literature\, writing\, and science communication for more than three decades at three universities\, he again lives and writes in Utah. \n\n\n\nErika Nesvold is an astrophysicist who has worked as a researcher at NASA Goddard and the Carnegie Institution for Science. She is a developer for Universe Sandbox\, a physics-based space simulator; cofounder of the nonprofit organization the JustSpace Alliance; and the creator and host of the podcast Making New Worlds. How should human space experience be regulated? What obligations do humans have to non-human life in space? These three questions offer a route into conceiving of space as a special source of philosophical enquiry.” (Rebecca Lowe) \n\n\n\nRebecca Lowe is Philosophy Senior Research Fellow at the Mercatus Center\, where she is also Director of Emerging Scholars. She is working on two books: ‘Freedom in Utopia’\, and ‘Speaking Freely’. She writes a Substack called ‘the ends don’t justify the means’\, and hosts a podcast called ‘Working Definition’. She often writes about space\, and until recently served as Consulting Space Philosopher for a strategic space advisory firm. Her space publications include an article on the value of space activity for Economic Affairs\, a follow-up piece for the American Philosophical Association blog on the value of private space activity\, and a paper for the Adam Smith Institute on lunar property rights. Other highlights have included appearing on the Planetary Society’s podcast\, and giving a keynote talk for the Flight Software Workshop at Johns Hopkins.
