SUMMARY:The Moon as Muse: Visions for Lunar Artistic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:The Moon has been a fountainhead of humanity’s time awareness beyond days and within seasons. Ancient artwork around the world testifies to the deep origins of our cultural relationship to our satellite world. The sheer volume of literature\, music and art about the Moon would take a massive undertaking to catalog across time and cultures. In this webinar\, we will focus on how the Moon inspires each panelist\, with an eye toward lunar artistic engagement that couples with wider audiences and with space agencies. What does lunar artistic engagement look like in the late Space Age and on a human-settled Moon? Tune in for provocative and beautiful work. \n\n\n\nAGENDA \n\n\n\nIntroduction – Remo RapettiCountdown: Biruni-Galileo-Apollo – Pantea KarimiMission Laureates: Further Thoughts – Christopher CokinosA New Aesthetics of the Moon – Yuri TanakaImagining an Artist in Residence on the Moon – Lisa Pettibone and Julie Swarstad JohnsonQ&A session – Arthur Woods\n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos is the author or co-editor of several books\, including\, most recently\, Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight\, with poet Julie Swarstad Johnson. He’s at work on a book about the Moon. Poems and prose have appeared recently in Scientific American\, The American Scholar\, The Space Review\, Astronomy.com and elsewhere. He’s an avid visual lunar observer with his 10-inch telescope. \n\n\n\nJulie Swarstad Johnson is a poet who lives in Tucson\, Arizona\, USA. She is the author of the poetry collection Pennsylvania Furnace (Unicorn Press\, 2019); with Christopher Cokinos\, she co-edited of the anthology Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight (University of Arizona Press\, 2020). She has served as Artist in Residence at Gettysburg National Military Park\, which led to the chapbook Orchard Light (Seven Kitchens Press\, 2020). She works as the Archivist and Outreach Librarian for the University of Arizona Poetry Center. \n\n\n\nPantea Karimi is a multidisciplinary artist incorporating VR\, performative video\, sound\, traditional and digital print\, and drawing. Her installations investigate and highlight personal narratives\, political and societal issues\, and Iran’s visual culture through the historic illustrated scientific documents. Karimi has exhibited internationally across a range of solo\, group and traveling exhibitions and her work is included in public collections. \n\n\n\nLisa Pettibone is a visual artist working in sculpture\, installation and print. Interested in natural forces such as gravity and tension\, her work explores the evolution of form and is underpinned by concepts related to physics and astronomy. In 2018-2019\, she was artist in residence at Mullard Space Science Laboratory where she studied the ESA’s Euclid Mission\, a space telescope exploring the nature of dark matter in the universe and launching in 2022. \n\n\n\nYuri Tanaka is a researcher at Tokyo University of the Arts where she received her Ph.D.\, a visiting researcher at Kyoto City University of Arts\, a visiting scientist at CERN\, and the head of Cosmic Art Research Committee. She has been pursuing to create a diverse collaboration mediated by ‘the universe’ as a mutually acceptable idea among different experts. Her projects can be mostly found in public spaces or at art/science festivals. \n\n\n\nImage: Moons of Naoshima by Takaharu Ito and Yuri Tanaka \n\n\n\nRegister on eventbrite to participate or watch live on the MVA Facebook Page. \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Space Design For A New Extra-Terrestrial Human Being
DESCRIPTION:with Annalisa Dominoni & Benedetto Quaquaro \n\n\n\nIntroduction by  Remo Rapetti\, Q&A session by Arthur Woods \n\n\n\nThursday\, September 15\, 2022\, at 17.30 CEST \n\n\n\nWhy “Space Design”? We believe space today\, and in the future\, will have an ever more decisive influence on the daily life\, behaviours and performance of people\, and\, consequently\, on the transformative capacity of private companies to generate innovation and new business models\, thanks to the strategic contribution of design. “Go to space” is the new aspirational dream. \n\n\n\nDesign is visionary\, design is innovation\, and act as a “bridge” between science and beauty\, speaking the different languages of engineering\, technology\, but also culture\, art and economy\, keeping at the centre the needs of people\, with the aim of increasing the well-being of living space and extreme environments looking at the “human sensible factors”. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar is presented the new emerging discipline of “Space Design” in between space and earth that anticipates the scenario of the future human space missions: if astronauts feel better in a comfortable environment\, considering physiological\, psychological\, and emotional factors\, their performance\, and the success of the whole mission increase. \n\n\n\nThe speakers\, thanks to their more than twenty-year experience in researching and designing for space at the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano\, as extra-terrestrial habitation modules and tools that have been used by astronauts on-board the International Space Station (ISS)\, have helped assert design’s role and purpose in the space field. They created and are leading currently at the School of Design the 1st and unique course in space design called “Space4InspirAction” recognized and supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) in which research and teaching are strongly connected with industry to create a dialogue between space technology and productive knowledge and generate innovation. \n\n\n\nBoth PhDs\, architects\, designers and professors\, they founded the studio (a+b) in Milan with the aim of doing design by combining research and technological innovation with poetry. They regularly collaborate with leading international space agencies and industries and major design companies\, at the same time they conduct research activities at the Design Department of the Politecnico di Milano\, together with teaching and publishing essays on the culture of the project that have contributed to affirming the strategic role of design in Space. \n\n\n\nRegister to participate: \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_4yP4aL0UR1SIF9TeaIBMRw

SUMMARY:IAC2022 - Press Conference: The First The International Moon Day - 20 July 2022
DESCRIPTION:LocationTerminal 7 \n\n\n\nDescription \n\n\n\nThe Moon Village Association considers that the peaceful exploration and utilisation of the Moon is the next step for humanity in opening new perspectives related to economic\, cultural\, and inspirational goals. The Moon has huge benefits to offer to humanity\, but these must be shared between all countries and involve space and non-space industries. Humanity needs to work together to reach this goal with all stakeholders\, including governments\, industry\, academia\, international organisations\, and the public. MVA proposed at the United Nations Committee on the Use of Outer Space the celebration of the International Moon Day on 20 July. This was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2021.Because MVA has been an early advocate of the concept of the International Moon Day (IMD) celebration\, MVA is taking the initiative to organize its implementation. The goals of the IMD are fully in line with the MVA mission and objectives to promote the development of lunar exploration in addressing the largest public\, scientific\, educational\, and industrial communities. The theme of the IMD for 2022 is “Lunar Exploration Coordination and Sustainability”. The celebration is involving either “bottom up” events organized at national level as well as “top down” event organized on a global scale. The roundtable shall discuss the achievements of the first year celebration held on 20 July 2022 and the plan for next year. \n\n\n\nSpeakersDr. Nasr AlsahhafDr. Dorin PrunariuProf. Simonetta Di Pippo \n\n\n\nModeratorDr. Giuseppe Reibaldi \n\n\n\nMore Info:https://www.iafastro.org/events/iac/iac-2022/media-partners/press-conferences/the-first-international-moon-day-20-july-2022.html

SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar - Space Habitats And Habitability: Designing For Isolated And Confined Environments On Earth And In Space
DESCRIPTION:With Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger and Sheryl Bishop \n\n\n\nIntroduction by Remo RapettiQ&A session by Arthur Woods \n\n\n\n\nHuman factors and habitability design are important topics for all working and living spaces. For space exploration\, they are vital. While human factors and certain habitability issues have been integrated into the design process of manned spacecraft\, there is a crucial need to move from mere survivability to factors that support thriving. As of today\, the risk of an incompatible vehicle or habitat design has already been identified by NASA as recognized key risk to human health and performance in space. Habitability and human factors will become even more important determinants for the design of future long-term and commercial space facilities as larger and more diverse groups occupy off-earth habitats.  The webinar will provide an overview of the evolution and advancements of designed living spaces for manned spacecrafts\, as well as analogue research and simulation facilities in extreme environments on Earth. \n\n\n\nSandra Häuplik-Meusburger\, PhD is a researcher and practicing architect in habitability design solutions for compact and extreme environments. She teaches and conducts ‘space architecture design studios’ at the department of building construction and design at the TU Wien for more than 15 years. Sandra is the academic director of the Science Academy in Lower Austria for which she developed the curriculum of a 2-year-interdisciplinary course on space research and technologies for adolescents. She is also the Academic Director of the new part-time MBA on Space Architecture that will start 2023 at the TU Wien.  She has published several scientific papers and worked on aerospace design and research projects\, as PI\, collaborator\, manager and initiator.  \n\n\n\nSheryl L. Bishop\, PhD is Professor Emeritus and Social Psychologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Nursing. As an internationally recognized behavioral researcher in extreme environments\, for the last 30 years Dr. Bishop has investigated human performance and group dynamics in teams in extreme\, unusual environments\, involving deep cavers\, mountain climbers\, desert survival groups\, polar expeditioners\, Antarctic winter-over groups and various simulations of isolated\, confined environments for space at remote habitats. She has over 60 publications (including NASA’s Historical Series on Psychology in Space) and over 50 scholarly presentations in both the medical and psychological fields.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister on Zoom to participate: \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_f1Dt5UqXTaitoICeiOL1DA \n\n\n\nThe webinar will be streamed on the MVA Youtube channel

White considers himself to be a “space philosopher\,” and has long advocated developing a new philosophy of space exploration. His book on this topic\, The Cosma Hypothesis: Implications of the Overview Effect\, has  been recently published. In it\, he asks the fundamental question\, “What is the purpose of human space exploration? Why has the evolutionary process brought humanity to the brink of becoming a spacefaring species?” In the book\, he shares the idea of “the Human Space Program” as a “central project” that will engage all of us in the process of becoming “Citizens of the Universe.” \n\n\n\nAnnahita Nezami: She is a chartered counselling psychologist with many years experience of working in mental health. SUMMARY:Cultural Considerations WG webinar - The Deep Space Effect\, Culture And The Human Space Program
DESCRIPTION:An in-depth webinar on the possible effects of humanity’s encounter with deep space. After the first space flights and the first testimonies of the astronauts on the Overview Effect\, pacifist and ecological movements have developed on a large scale. How will global society react when space travel multiplies and travelers report their impressions of the immensity of the cosmic void? Will they choose the universalist sentiments reported by Edgar Mitchell or will they espouse the pessimistic vision of William Shatner? In this webinar\, space philosopher and author of seminal books\, Frank White\, will focus on probable cultural shifts and how to organize the next space exploration fairly and sustainably. \n\n\n\nIntroduction:Remo Rapetti \n\n\n\nKey Speaker:Frank White\, space philosopher and author \n\n\n\nComments and questions by:Giuseppe Reibaldi\, President\, MVAGiulio Prisco\, futurist\, cosmist and authorStefano Catucci\, philosopher and author \n\n\n\nQ&A session:Arthur Woods \n\n\n\nRegistration: \n\n\n\n\nRegister
