SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Governance of Global Moon exploration and settlement - Episode 1: Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:The event is SOLD OUT. Watch the webinar on our Facebook Page. \nHumanity will soon be returning to the Moon through the individual and cooperative efforts of multiple space agencies and private companies around the world. This new era of lunar exploration will witness resource extraction\, energy generation\, habitat construction\, and\, in short\, a growing permanent international human presence on our Moon with everything that human settlements bring. \nThe community of space lawyers and policymakers have responded to this new reality on multiple fronts and have produced a number of instruments including (i) the coming UNCOPUOS General exchange of Views on Potential Legal Models for Activities in Exploration\, Exploitation\, and Utilization of Space Resources\, (ii) The Hague Building Blocks for the Development of an International Framework on Space Resource Activities\, (iii) the Moon Village Principles on Best Practices for Sustainable Lunar Practices\, and (iv) NASA’s Artemis Accords. Of course\, all of these initiatives exist against the background of existing international law. \nThese webinars will invite all stakeholders in humanity’s return to the Moon to learn about these various initiatives and to offer their thoughts to the conversation. In the webinars\, it will be explained how each of these initiatives fulfills a different role in laying the legal groundwork for future lunar activity — but they each also complement one another and combine to create a path forward in creating an international legal ecosphere that will facilitate the success of the current lunar projects\, while at the same time addressing the needs of the international community. \nThe first episode\, “Governance of Global Moon exploration and settlement – Episode 1: Best Practices”\, provides an introductory glimpse at the Moon exploration and settlement global political landscape\, including an overview of the Moon Village Principles and the relevant legal and political instruments. \nWatch live on Facebook or join the waiting list. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/governance-of-global-moon-exploration-and-settlement-episode-1-tickets-109945199050 \nAgenda: \n\n 5:00 – 5:10 – Introduction (Giuseppe Reibaldi)\n 5:10 – 5:25 – The Moon global political landscape (John B. Sheldon) \n 5:25 – 5:40 – Moon Village Principles as Best Practices (Mark J. Sundahl)\n 5:40 – 5:45 – Outlook on future episodes \n 5:45 – 6:05 – Discussion (Moderator: Antonino Salmeri\, SGAC)\n 6:05 – 6:10 – Conclusions\n\nSpeakers: \nDr. John B. SheldonDr. John B. Sheldon is the founder of the forthcoming Lunapolitics.com and regularly consults on space policy issues for governments and companies around the world. John has extensive experience in space policy issues as an academic\, policy maker\, and entrepreneur\, and founded Astropolitics journal published by Taylor & Francis and SpaceWatch.Global published by ThorGroup GmbH. \nProf. Mark J. SundahlMark J. Sundahl is a Professor of Law at Cleveland State University and serves as the Director of the Global Space Law Center. Prof. Sundahl is a leading expert on the law of outer space and focuses primarily on the business\, legal\, and policy issues arising from the recent increase in private space activity. He is currently a member of NASA’s Regulatory and Policy Committee as well as a member of the Moon Village Association.

SUMMARY:Governance of Global Moon exploration and settlement – Episode 2: Operating with Due Regard\, Avoiding Harmful Interference\, and Establishing Safety Zones
DESCRIPTION:Humanity will soon be returning to the Moon through the individual and cooperative efforts of multiple space agencies and private companies around the world. This new era of lunar exploration will witness resource extraction\, energy generation\, habitat construction\, and\, in time\, a growing permanent international human presence on our Moon with everything that human settlements bring. \nThe community of space lawyers and policymakers have responded to this new reality on multiple fronts and have produced a number of instruments including (i) the upcoming UNCOPUOS General exchange of Views on Potential Legal Models for Activities in Exploration\, Exploitation\, and Utilization of Space Resources\, (ii) NASA’s Artemis Accords\, (iii) The Hague Building Blocks for the Development of an International Framework on Space Resource Activities\, and (iv) the Moon Village Principles regarding Best Practices for Sustainable Lunar Activity. Of course\, all of these initiatives exist against the background of existing international law. These webinars will invite all stakeholders to learn about these various initiatives and to contribute their thoughts to the conversation. The webinar explains how each of these initiatives fulfills a different role in laying the legal groundwork for future lunar activity. These initiatives complement one another and combine to create a path toward an international legal ecosphere that will facilitate the success of the current lunar projects\, while at the same time addressing the needs of the international community. \nThis second episode will address some of the central issues that hover above humanity’s return to the Moon: \n\nWhat constitutes operating “with due regard to the corresponding interests” of other nations as required under the Outer Space Treaty?\nWhat constitutes “harmful interference”\, is such interference permitted\, and how can it be avoided?\nCan “safety zones” be used by space actors to help prevent harmful interference? How will the parameters of safety zones be determined? What exactly would be the legal nature of these safety zones?\n\n  \nRegistrations: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/governance-of-global-moon-exploration-and-settlement-episode-2-tickets-114387118952 \nRegister to participate in the webinar or watch live on the MVA Facebook Page. \nThe admission in the webinar will be on a first come first served basis. \nSpeakers: \n\nMike Gold\, Acting Associate Administrator for International and Interagency Relations\, NASA\nMarius Piso\, President and CEO\, Romanian Space Agency\nMark J. SUMMARY:Governance of Global Moon Exploration and Settlement Episode 3 - Sharing the Benefits of Lunar Activities
DESCRIPTION:Both the United States and China have revealed their plans to return people to the Moon in the near future. Many other countries\, as well as private companies\, will partner with the U.S. and China in these endeavors. As these missions move forward\, the risk for interference or conflict arising from competition for sunlight\, ice\, and land will grow. In order to reduce this risk\, a set of basic ground rules must be implemented. NASA has begun the process of establishing these rules among its partners in the Artemis Project through a series of bilateral agreements. But the Artemis Accords are aimed to Artemis partners only. The Moon Village Association’s Best Practices for Sustainable Lunar Activity fill this gap by providing a process for developing multilateral ground rules for all countries that are heading to the Moon. The Principles were issued last March by MVA and can be seen at: https://moonvillageassociation.org/moon-village-principles-mvp-issue-2-draft-public-consultation-opens/. \nAmong the many legal issues that need clarification is the extent to which space faring countries are obligated to share the benefits of their Moon missions. The sharing of benefits is a fundamental principle of law that is enshrined in the very first article of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty: \n“The exploration and use of outer space\, including the Moon and other celestial bodies\, shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries\, irrespective of their degree of economic or scientific development\, and shall be the province of all mankind. “ \nBut what exactly does this article mean? What types of benefits are to be shared? And how? \nThe second principle in the current draft of the Best Practices for Sustainable Lunar Activity attempts to elaborate on the duty to share benefits by encouraging all space actors to: \n“Conduct lunar activities in a manner that takes into account the interests of other actors and benefits all countries and humankind. Both governmental and nongovernmental actors involved in lunar activities should provide for benefit-sharing through all feasible means\, including for example the promotion of the participation in lunar activities by all countries\, and\, in particular\, developing countries. “ \nThis webinar will take up this critical issue with the intent of acquiring a better understanding of the meaning and practical impact of the requirement to share benefits according to Best Practices Principles. The panelists will discuss why developing countries should support the adoption of the Best Practices to implement concrete measure on benefit sharing for the upcoming lunar missions. \nRegister to participate in the webinar:  \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/governance-of-global-moon-exploration-and-settlement-episode-3-tickets-119060935463 \nor watch live on the MVA Facebook Page. \nThe admission in the webinar will be on a first come first served basis. \n  \n  \nSpeakers: \n\nMr. Ian Christensen\, Director of Private Sector Programs\, Secure World Foundation\nMs. Fadahunsi-banjo Motolani\, Chief Legal Officer at National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA)\, the Nigerian Outer Space Agency\nMs. Loreto Moraga\, Director Moon Project Committee Coordinator\, Chilean Space Association (ACHIDE)\nDr. Giuseppe Reibaldi\, President\, Moon Village Association \nProf. Mark J. SUMMARY:Webinar – MVA Architectural Concepts Working Group
DESCRIPTION:The world is going to the Moon together. Over the coming 6-7 years\, dozens of cubesats\, orbiters\, landers\, rovers and sample returns from up to a dozen countries will be heading to the Moon. The primary focus will be on the science\, exploration and on prospects for development of the Moon – with a clear emphasis on the lunar south pole\, where large-scale deposits of water ice and other volatile materials are believed to exist. \nNumerous space agencies worldwide are now sponsoring projects – including NASA\, CNSA\, JAXA\, ESA\, RSA\, ISRO and others – which will lead during this decade to humanity’s return to our Moon. \nThe Moon Village Association (MVA)\, a non-governmental organization (NGO) formed in Vienna to advance the goal of a global Moon Village (MV)\, through its MV Architectural Concepts and Considerations Working Group (MV Architecture WG) is during 2020-2021 conducting a focused ‘case study’ examining the ambitious goal of establishing a biologically self-sufficient settlement on the Moon by 2045. Topics include: siting for such a settlement (considering current plans)\, key ‘building blocks’ that would comprise such as settlement\, interoperability\, and more. \nProgram \nThe event will be held during 16:00-17:30 CEST on 14 September 2020 (Monday in Europe). It is being organized as a ‘workshop-webinar’: about 50% of the planned 1.5-hour discussion will be dedicated to presentation of the current MV Architecture WG Lunar Settlement Case Study; co-Chair of the WG\, John C. Mankins will present. \nRegister to participate in the webinar:  \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/mva-architectural-concepts-working-group-webinar-tickets-119257371007 \nor watch live on the MVA Facebook Page. \nThe admission in the webinar will be on a first come first served basis. \nClosing \nHumanity is going to the Moon; you have the opportunity to join this endeavor and to contribute now to developments that will play out during the remainder of this Century. Please join this working discussion\, and to consider joining the Case Study team is it continues efforts to define the first lunar Settlement over the coming year. \nThis event will be one step in the ongoing Case Study\, with additional events being held later this year and next; the details of this plan forward will be discussed at the meeting. SUMMARY:Addressing Capacity Building - Facilitating engagement in the Moon Village
DESCRIPTION:The vision of the Moon Village Association is to engage space stakeholders\, and most importantly non-space “actors” to implement the Moon Village. International cooperation is key in achieving this\, and furthermore engaging countries that are not the usual players in the field is important. The workforce of the near future needs to be nurtured via a wide grassroots effort. \nThe Moon Village Association has recently implemented their Program for Emerging Space Countries (PESC) which has stimulated interest from around the world. The interested parties\, agencies and entities from these emerging countries will require an educational program\, as well as a technical training program at all the levels – from schools\, to universities\, to industry. \nThe established industry from leading space faring nations will also require their future workforce to possess multi-discipline diverse skills in order to undertake the bold goals of returning to the Moon and creating the first off-world base of humanity on a celestial body other than our planet Earth. \nAll the above need synergies between key players: \n\nThe Moon Village Association\, as the institutional platform connecting multi-stakeholders for implementing the Moon Village\, utilizing its own PESC program.\nThe Space Generation Advisory Council\, as the international community of all youth that has gone out of their way to engage their interest in a career in space exploration.\nThe Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation\, as the stakeholder with a worldwide network of educational and training material\, and a global audience reaching over 1 million people in CSEO’s dissemination of outreach\, education and capacity building.\nThe United Nation Office for Outer Space Affairs\, the global official institutional body that drives international efforts for regulating and uniting that nations of our planet in a common goal of peaceful exploration of space beyond our cradle Earth.\n\nAbove key players are brought together in this unique webinar that seeks to answer and or identify the needs of capacity building for space and lunar exploration. \n  \nRegister on Eventbrite to participate in the webinar or watch live on the MVA Facebook Page and CSEO Facebook Page. \nThe admission in the webinar will be on a first come first served basis. \n  \n\n\nParticipants: \nParticipants: \n\nJorge Del Rio Vera: Office for Outer Space Affairs United Nations Office\, Vienna\nAntonino Salmeri\, Space Generation Advisory Council\nGhanim Alotaibi\, PESC Project\, Moon Village Association\nGeorge A Danos\, Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO)\nGiuseppe Reibaldi\, Moon Village Association \n\nModerator: \nMaria Lavithi\, Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO) \nProgram \n\n4:30 – 4:40 pm: Introduction – George A Danos and Giuseppe Reibaldi\n4:40 – 4:50 pm: SGAC – The scientists and engineers of the future\n4:50 – 5:00 pm: UNOOSA – Connecting established and emerging space-faring nations: Access to Space for All\n5:00 – 5:10 pm: PESC – Preparing Emerging Countries for the Moon Village\n5:10 – 5:20 pm: CSEO – Capacity Building and the future lunar workforce\n5:20 – 5:55 pm: Round table discussion – Moderator CSEO\n5:55 – 6:00 pm: Conclusion

SUMMARY:MVA PAYLOAD - The Overview Effect
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear perspectives of the MVA payload project goals from leaders in their fields! \nWhen humans first set off for the Moon with the Apollo program\, and in particular the Apollo 8 mission\, they were profoundly moved by what they saw. \nThey’d been further than any human in the history of our planet and were approaching a new world – but it was what they left behind that really changed their perspective. From a distance\, they saw our home – spaceship Earth – “hanging in the void”. \nThis was the first time someone had described the term the “Overview Effect” – a cognitive state of awareness only acquired when being so far away from the Earth itself\, that one becomes overwhelmed by its beauty\, fragility and loneliness in the darkness of space. When you’re far enough from home\, you really get a sense of appreciating it. \nBut not everyone has the same experience of the Overview Effect. For some\, it brought fear and overwhelming feelings of alienation and isolation.  \nWe’re very excited to be collaborating with the Moon Village Association\, to bring together a range of speakers to talk about the wonders of the Overview Effect.  \nSpeakers \n\nLiza Koumi- Moon Village Payloads Project Manager\, Space projects engineer\, and International Space University Alumni\nPhilippe Van Nedervelde- Award winning VR creator\, Advocate for Spaceflight and Futurist.\nAlice Gorman a.k.a Dr Space Junk -Space Archaeologist\, Heritage consultant and Board member of the Space Industry Assocation of Australia and Space4women.\nCarley Scott- CEO of Equitorial Launch Australia- Australia’s Spaceport at 12 Degrees\, Board of Space Industry Association of Australia and CSIRO’s Advanced Manufacturing Academy. .\nVienna Tran\, Moderator of the event\,Space medicine researcher and Writer with Space Australia.\nDr Sarah Jane Pell – Analogue astronaut \, Award winning Artist\, Researcher.\n\nThursday the 29th of October AEST 6:00pm (UTC+11) \, 8:00am CET \nTo register: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/mva-payload-the-overview-effect-tickets-124812009079
