SUMMARY:MVA Participation on RUDN University Space Week
DESCRIPTION:MVA President\, Dr. Giuseppe Reibaldi\, will be participating in the RUDN University Space Week with the presentation “Moon Village Association contribution to sustainable lunar activities”\, on October 5.\n\n\n\n\nEvent Program\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRUDN University Space Week \n\n\n\nOctober 4-7\, 2021\, the University will host RUDN University Space Week for the first time. A series of panel discussions with prominent representatives of the space science will be organized within 4 days. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\, there was a boom in space activities: the landing of the Perseverance rover on Mars\, the launch of the first module of the Tiangong space station\, a series of suborbital human flights into space\, which gave a new round to the era of space tourism. These events affect not only the development of humanity\, but the evolution of space law. \n\n\n\nOn December 6\, 1999\, the UN General Assembly proclaimed World Space Week as an annual holiday. This event is celebrated every year from October 4 to 10. The choice of the period is based on two important dates in the history of cosmonautics: the launch of the first artificial satellite of the Earth and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the contribution of space science and technology to improving human living conditions. This idea inspires students\, contributes to the formation of future specialists\, and demonstrates significant public support for space activities. \n\n\n\nOctober 4-7\, 2021\, within the framework of the World Space Week\, the Zhukov Center for Space Law of the Department of International Law will hold together with the RUDN University Engineering Academy – RUDN University Space Week. The event format includes a series of online lectures\, discussion panels and Q&A sessions. Among the outstanding participants and partners of the event are representatives of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL\, Paris)\, Moon Village Association (Vienna\, Austria)\, Airbus Defence and Space (Leiden\, the Netherlands)\, Eutelsat (Paris\, France)\, Endurosat (Sofia\, Bulgaria)\, International  Organization of Space Communications «Intersputnik»\, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)\, National Institute of Space Research (INPE\, São Paulo\, Brazil)\, Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences\, Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Mumbai\, McGill University (Montreal\, Canada)\, University of Hong Kong\, Flinders University (Adelaide\, Australia)\, ROSCOSMOS Academy.  At the question-and-answer sessions\, you can ask any questions: is it possible to buy a plot on the Moon\, when will the space elevator be built and will space buses be created? \n\n\n\nThe working language of the event is English\, simultaneous translation is not provided. \n\n\n\nTo get into the fascinating world of space\, you need to click on the link http://intlaw.rudn.ru/en/research/space-week/ and register for the event.

SUMMARY:MVA participation in APRSAF Space Policy and Law Working Group (SPLWG)
DESCRIPTION:MVA Vice President\, John C. Mankins will represent the Moon Vilalge Association at the APRSAF Space Policy and Law Working Group (SPLWG). \n\n\n\nThis session will discuss and envisage how international governance should be to understand\, share and mitigate the anticipated risks in future space domain taking into consideration the new space activities involving emerging space players in Asia-Pacific region. The session will have presentations focusing on views and opinions concerning space sustainability surrounding emerging public and commercial players in the region. As we recognize it would be important to work with emerging space faring nations to effectively implement the “soft law” where every stakeholders could observe\, such as UN Guidelines for the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities (LTS Guidelines)\, we aim to find out the challenges and possible international cooperation for ensuring the space sustainability through the discussion with speakers from Asia-Pacific region. \n\n\n\nThe specific topics in the session will include: 1) Future space activities in the Asia-Pacific region and anticipated risks and threats to the sustainable use of outer space; 2) LEO governance considering satellites mega-constellation\, on-orbit servicing\, which could result in risks such as increasing collision of satellites; and 3) Lunar governance considering how emerging countries and private sector could work sustainably in moon exploration and exploitation. \n\n\n\nMore info at https://www.aprsaf.org/working_groups/spl/

SUMMARY:Cultural WG webinar: Spirituality and the Moon
DESCRIPTION:The spiritual needs of space enthusiasts and future Moon workers and settlers need to be addressed as the settlement of the Moon advances. This webinar will explore possible whys and hows. \n\n\n\nAgenda: \n\n\n\nIntroduction – Remo RapettiFuturist Moonlight Meditations – Giulio PriscoSacred space – Catherine NewellPeak of Eternal Light – Jorge Mañes RubioQ&A session – Arthur Woods\n\n\n\nGiulio Prisco is a former space engineer and senior manager at European space administrations. In his book “Futurist spaceflight meditations” (2021)\, Prisco covers spaceflight and human expansion into space\, with a special emphasis on cultural and spiritual aspects. Prisco’s thesis is that human expansion into the solar system\, starting with outposts on the surface of the Moon and in cislunar space\, is a cornerstone of emerging future spirituality. This new spirituality will\, in turn\, inform human expansion toward the stars. \n\n\n\nCatherine Newell is a scholar of religion and science who is particularly interested in the intersections of science\, technology\, culture\, and spirituality. In her book “Destined for the Stars: Faith\, the Future\, and the Final Frontier\,” Newell traces the cultural and spiritual roots of US space exploration programs and argues that they were mainly inspired by a technological and scientific faith that awoke a deep-seated belief in a sense of divine destiny to reach the heavens. \n\n\n\nJorge Mañes Rubio is an artist whose works rethink humanity’s relationship with the universe and all the beings that live in it. As Artist in Residence at the Advanced Concepts Team ESA\, Rubio designed a Moon Temple for a future lunar settlement in Shackleton Crater. The Moon Temple wouldn’t be associated with any specific religion. On the contrary\, it would be open to everyone\, in particular to the fast-growing category of people who describe themselves as “spiritual but not religious.”

SUMMARY:The Moon as Muse: Visions for Lunar Artistic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:The Moon has been a fountainhead of humanity’s time awareness beyond days and within seasons. Ancient artwork around the world testifies to the deep origins of our cultural relationship to our satellite world. The sheer volume of literature\, music and art about the Moon would take a massive undertaking to catalog across time and cultures. In this webinar\, we will focus on how the Moon inspires each panelist\, with an eye toward lunar artistic engagement that couples with wider audiences and with space agencies. What does lunar artistic engagement look like in the late Space Age and on a human-settled Moon? Tune in for provocative and beautiful work. \n\n\n\nAGENDA \n\n\n\nIntroduction – Remo RapettiCountdown: Biruni-Galileo-Apollo – Pantea KarimiMission Laureates: Further Thoughts – Christopher CokinosA New Aesthetics of the Moon – Yuri TanakaImagining an Artist in Residence on the Moon – Lisa Pettibone and Julie Swarstad JohnsonQ&A session – Arthur Woods\n\n\n\nChristopher Cokinos is the author or co-editor of several books\, including\, most recently\, Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight\, with poet Julie Swarstad Johnson.
